How much does a bathroom renovation cost?

It’s the most asked question in our industry, ‘how much does a bathroom renovation cost’ and we understand why.

So lets break it down.

There are hundreds of bathroom renovators out there, all pricing their services and skills at varying cost levels. Our value is placed on the qualified labour and skillset applied to creating a quality bathroom.

As a rule of thumb, labour and building materials costs are at least double, (sometimes treble) the cost of the tiles, fixtures and fittings. This may seem quite a shock, but when you consider the number of professional trades and skills involved in such works you will understand why this is so.

There are:

  • Plumbers
  • Tilers
  • Waterproofers
  • Plasterers
  • Carpenters

With all of these trades working on a bathroom renovation for a constant number of days and weeks this is where the majority of the cost lies.

According to a recent report, the Home Industry Association (HIA) identified that

the average value for bathrooms installed as part of a renovation at $19,553.

As bathroom renovations are our business, this is how we would answer “how much does a bathroom renovation cost?”;

A simple yet sylish bathroom renovation costs from $17,000 plus $5,000 on tiles and bathroom wares. This would include half tiling the room, no changes to plumbing, like for like with new off the shelf fixtures.

A mid-level renovation, with some changes to plumbing, walk in tiled shower base, shower niche and floor to ceiling tiling costs from $23,000 plus $7-$8,000 on your tiles and fixtures etc.

A high-end renovation encompasses all that a mid-range reno has but with more of it and custom made vanities, freestanding baths that ‘wow’, lux tapwear and feature tiling. A bathroom of this status would cost from $36,000 plus over $15,000 for the bathroom wares.

It’s also worth mentioning that what you are willing to spend on your bathroom(s) should be relative to the value of your property. A house valued at over $2million will not achieve a desired outocome with a low-level renovation and the same applies for a lesser valued home; a house worth $500,000 would not benefit (financially) from spending $35,000 on a bathroom.
