Essential Considerations When Renovating Bayside Homes

When renovating bathrooms in Bayside’s historical homes, it is crucial to take a meticulous approach. One of the first things that will likely need updating is the plumbing, given that old copper pipes have served these homes for decades, often requiring an upgrade to modern PVC for longevity and efficiency. On the electrical front, overloaded circuits and past DIY endeavours can pose risks. It’s vital to ensure a safe, updated electrical system that meets contemporary standards.

Older Bayside homes may have uneven floor surfaces that need to be levelled out, and those built in the 1930s and later likely have asbestos in the walls, which should be carefully removed to ensure a safer environment. At times, unexpected hurdles like rotted noggins or leaking pipes may surface, demanding immediate attention.

In homes with solid walls that make built-in niches impossible to install, innovative alternatives like shower caddies can help you save space. Lastly, while window replacements carry a cost, they are investments in brightness, energy efficiency and enhanced aesthetics, elevating the property’s value and charm.

Planning a bathroom renovation for your family doesn’t have to be a daunting task – it can be an exciting endeavour when you know how to approach it. When creating a functional space for your family, you’ll need to take into account both style and functionality. In particular, a modern family bathroom should not only reflect your personal taste but also cater to the practical needs of all family members and their everyday routines.

One way to make the process more straightforward is to rely on the expertise of an experienced bathroom designer, such as the team at the Victorian Bathroom Company. A professional designer will understand the importance of creating a space that is both luxurious and family-friendly.

The team at VBC have put together a list of their favourite modern family bathroom ideas that strike the perfect balance between style and functionality, helping you transform your bathroom into a tranquil and inviting space for your entire household.

Optimise Space With Your Layout

A well-designed family bathroom layout is crucial at the best of times, but becomes even more important when space is limited. By planning carefully, you can make efficient use of the available space in your bathroom.

Consider aspects such as the traffic flow within the room and place your vanity and fixtures in a way that prioritises ease of movement. When it comes to bathrooms used by multiple people, dual vanity units are an excellent choice. Additionally, wall-hung storage cabinets not only add a touch of elegance but also free up valuable floor space. By focusing on maximising space, you can create a comfortable and inviting atmosphere.

Include Timeless Design Elements

Modern family bathroom design doesn’t have to be synonymous with fleeting trends. If you’re looking for a contemporary aesthetic that will also stand the test of time, opt for clean lines, neutral colour palettes, and a balance of textures to create a more sophisticated ambience.

If you are looking to enhance both functionality and style, you may want to incorporate elements such as a freestanding bath, a spacious walk-in shower, or concealed storage solutions. By selecting timeless design elements, you will ensure that your bathroom remains visually appealing for years to come.

Prioritise Smart Storage Solutions

An organised and clutter-free bathroom is essential for creating a harmonious family environment – especially on busy mornings. Including plenty of storage in your bathroom is vital to keeping essentials within easy reach while maintaining a clean and tidy appearance.

Consider fitted furniture that maximises storage capacity, such as custom cabinets, drawers, and shelving units. A more affordable alternative is to utilise under-counter organisers, over-the-toilet shelving, or hanging organisers on the back of the door to optimise space. By incorporating clever storage options, you create a serene and functional space for your whole family.

Accommodate All Family Members

Whether you need large family bathroom ideas or something simple, it is important to cater to the diverse needs of each family member. Most family friendly bathroom design ideas incorporate features that make the space accessible and safe for everyone.

Your bathroom designer can suggest ideas for keeping your space family friendly. These could include installing adjustable shower heads to accommodate different heights, built-in storage niches for toiletries, and low-level shower trays to reduce trip hazards. By creating an inclusive environment, your family bathroom becomes a space that everyone can enjoy comfortably.

Focus on Quality Materials and Lighting Finishes

When it comes to creating a luxurious family bathroom, quality materials and lighting finishes are essential. Opt for durable, easy-to-clean surfaces such as porcelain tiles, quartz countertops, and high-quality taps and fixtures. These premium materials not only elevate the aesthetic appeal of your bathroom but also ensure longevity and ease of maintenance.

It is also important to pay attention to lighting and mirrors, as these can enhance the sense of space in a bathroom. Incorporate a combination of ambient, accent and natural lighting to create a well-lit and inviting space, and consider installing mirrors strategically to reflect light and make the room appear larger.

When it comes to planning a complete bathroom renovation, one of the most important elements to consider is the bathtub. Finding the right bath that will best suit your space and personal preferences is one of the simplest ways to add both luxury and relaxation into your life.

With a wide variety of bath styles available, it can be challenging to navigate through the different types of bathtubs and select the perfect one without help from experts like those at the Victorian Bathroom Company. Whether you’re looking for a luxurious centrepiece or a practical and space-saving option, this guide is designed to help you make more informed decisions on your bathroom upgrade.

Freestanding Baths

Freestanding baths are a timeless choice for an elegant and luxurious bathroom. These standalone tubs are not attached to any walls or surfaces, but are instead placed freely on the floor, allowing for flexibility in their placement around the room. Due to their size, freestanding baths often become the focal point of the bathroom, creating a striking visual statement. They come in various shapes, including classic clawfoot designs, contemporary oval shapes, and modern rectangular styles. A freestanding bath will offer a sense of indulgence and relaxation to any bathroom.

Back to Wall Baths

If you are looking for seamless style in your bathroom, back to wall baths are the natural choice. These baths are designed to be positioned against a wall, providing a neat and streamlined appearance that maximises space and area for movement around the bathroom. Back to wall baths are a hybrid between a freestanding bath and an inset bath. Highly versatile, they give the aesthetic of a freestanding with the practicality of a fixed bath and they can be installed with a wall-mounted tap or combined with a bath shower mixer for added functionality. This type of bath is an ideal choice for smaller bathrooms or for those who prefer a minimalist aesthetic.

Shower Baths

For those seeking the best of both worlds, shower baths are types of bathtubs that offer a practical and space-saving solution. Combining a bath with a dedicated showering area, they are ideal for bathrooms with limited space. Shower baths typically feature a wider showering end and a narrower bathing end, allowing for comfortable showering while still providing sufficient bathing space. They are available in various configurations, such as L-shaped and P-shaped designs, offering flexibility in design and functionality to suit your space.

Inset Baths

Inset baths, also known as alcove baths, are one of the most common bath trends found in households. These baths are designed to be fitted into an alcove or recessed area, with three of their sides enclosed by walls. Inset baths are known for their practicality, as they maximise space and are often combined with a shower above. They are available in various sizes and shapes, ranging from compact tubs for smaller bathrooms, to more spacious options for larger settings. Inset baths provide a classic and versatile option that can easily blend with any bathroom style.

Japanese Baths

Embracing the art of relaxation, Japanese baths offer a unique experience deeply rooted in traditional Japanese culture. These deep-soaking tubs are designed for an immersive bathing experience, allowing you to fully submerge your body for ultimate relaxation. Japanese baths are typically compact and feature a deeper design compared to standard tubs. They can be made from materials such as  acrylic and even wood if you wish to add a touch of organic beauty to your bathroom. Japanese baths are perfect for those who value tranquillity and enjoy soaking as a regular part of their bathing routine.

How to Install Your Bath

Selecting the right type of bath for your renovation is essential to creating a space that is both functional and visually appealing. By understanding the various types of bath available, you can make an informed and confident decision that suits your needs, space, and personal style. Whatever your preferred type of bath is, the Victorian Bathroom Company can guide you through the process of choosing and installing your bath. Space can be hard to come by nowadays, and when your home doesn’t have enough of it, everyday tasks can feel like a chore.  This is where a Laundry Bathroom Combo comes into play. Trying to accomplish too much in a small space often leads to clutter, forcing you to sacrifice style for function.

In order to maximise space, more and more homeowners are choosing to combine a bathroom and laundry. This can be done easily and affordably due in part to the rise and availability of more compact laundry appliances.

If you’re wondering how you can fit a shower, toilet, sink, washing machine, dryer, extra counter space and more into a bathroom, this guide will help you discover new ways to design a laundry bathroom combo. With the right planning and guidance from experts, you can create a combined bathroom and laundry that saves space while also effortlessly blending aesthetics with functionality.

Popular Combined Bathroom and Laundry Styles

When planning a bathroom laundry renovation, one of the easiest and most affordable ways to combine the two spaces is with the simple inclusion of a door. This ‘hidden’ laundry design involves keeping the bathroom as the main function of the room, and concealing the laundry behind closed doors – the perfect way to maintain separation between the two spaces and reduce clutter.

Most designers suggest positioning the bathroom at the entryway and the laundry at the rear of the room so that people don’t have to pass by washing baskets and everyday laundry to use the facilities. The best doors to use for this style of bathroom laundry combo include pocket, hinged, sliding, and bifold. However, if you’re willing to go the extra mile, opt for flat panel doors that mimic a regular wall when closed to create the illusion of a complete bathroom.

Bathroom/Laundry Combo

Bathroom Laundry Combo Layouts to Save Space

One of the most efficient laundry bathroom combo ideas is installing your washer and dryer in your existing bathroom, freeing up that old laundry room for other uses. In this layout, the new laundry becomes part of the existing room itself rather than being hidden. The key here is to maintain a cohesive style between your laundry appliances and the rest of the bathroom so that each zone is integrated to become one whole room.

Depending on how much space you have in your bathroom, you might also like to consider an all-in-one washer and dryer, which will provide more space for storage, as well as bench space for everyday laundry tasks. If you do have the space for new cabinets, consider placing your washer and dryer next to the bathroom sink and install a countertop above. This can help to connect the two areas while still maintaining a defined laundry space.

Combined Bathroom and Laundry

Important Design Considerations

When combining bathroom and laundry room spaces, it’s best to focus on the essentials. Each room can hold a lot of clutter on its own, which makes minimalism the key for keeping each section of your combined space organised. This is especially true when your space is small, and you’re dealing with combination small bathroom and laundry room combo designs.

Start by opting for simple storage styles, such as seamless cabinetry to maintain continuity between the two spaces. Effortlessly keep your floors clear by placing washing baskets in the bathroom cabinets, and pack other tools and appliances away with built-in storage or towel rails. If you’re lucky enough to have a free corner space in your bathroom laundry combo, you can even try blending the countertops together between each space with feature tiles or mosaics.

Once you’ve got the basics covered, it’s also important to consider aspects such as lighting and ventilation, as these are smaller considerations that make a big difference. Adding large mirrors and taking advantage of natural lighting available in your bathroom laundry combo will keep the area feeling open and create the impression of more space.

Ceramic vs Porcelain Tiles

Choosing the right tiles for your bathroom goes beyond just selecting a style, colour and finish. When selecting your bathroom tiles, it’s important to take into account what the tile is made out of and how suitable it is for your space.

The two main types of tiles are porcelain and ceramic, and the difference between the two is slight. A tile is categorised as porcelain or ceramic based on the materials they’re made from and how well they absorb water. Many people don’t realise there are different types of tiles available to them, as regardless of whether you’ve chosen a ceramic or porcelain tile, your tiler will likely install it in the same way. Both types of tiles also have similar glazing, making the difference between the two even more difficult to spot.

The type of tile that is most suitable for your needs will depend on how you plan to use your space, including the level of waterproofing, plus your style and budget. Generally, porcelain tiles are more suitable for rooms with high levels of moisture and ceramic tiles are more suitable for DIY builders and people without enough experience to work with porcelain tiles.

When making the decision between porcelain or ceramic tiles for bathroom use, understanding the difference between the two will help you select the best tile for your needs.

The Pros and Cons of: Ceramic vs Porcelain Tiles

Depending on the requirements of your build, including whether you’re completing the project yourself and your budget, there are a number of pros and cons to both porcelain and ceramic tiles. The tiles that are best for you will be determined by your individual needs.

Porcelain Tiles

PROS

CONS

Denser

Porcelain tiles are harder and more dense than ceramic tiles, due to being fired at a higher temperature and being made of white clay, feldspar and sand.

More Costly

The better quality of porcelain tiles results in them being more costly than ceramic tiles. While the initial investment is greater, it is repaid through the longevity of the tiles and the unlikelihood of porcelain tiles needing to be replaced in the future.

Waterproof and Hard-wearing

These tiles absorb significantly less water than their ceramic counterparts and therefore are more hard-wearing. This makes porcelain tiles more suitable for wet areas of the home, such as bathrooms.

Longer Lasting

Porcelain tiles often last longer than ceramic tiles when in places with high foot traffic and wet areas. As a result, porcelain is the best option for people looking to minimise the likelihood of their tiles becoming broken or damaged in an often-used, wet environment.

Ceramic Tiles

ceramic tiles

PROS

CONS

Less Dense

Ceramic tiles can be made with white, brown or red clay which makes them less dense than porcelain tiles. This makes them easier to install than porcelain tiles.

Low Traffic Areas Only

Ceramic tiles are significantly softer than porcelain tiles, and while this has its benefits, it means they shouldn’t be used in areas with high foot traffic. The gentle nature of the tiles means they are more prone the breaking under pressure.

Easy to Use

The softer of the two materials, ceramic tiles are often easier to use and are more suitable for DIY-ers and people without tiling experience.

Inside-use Only

Once again, due to the softness of ceramic tiles, they can only be used inside. This will limit the number of places your tiles can be used and minimises the applications that ceramic tiles are appropriate for.

Wall & Floor Decor

Ceramic tiles can be used to decorate both the walls and floors of your home, as long as they’re not used for the entirety of the floors. This type of tile is perfect as a decorative piece that adds vibrancy and intricate detail to your space.

Less Robust

In rare instances, ceramic tiles can crack when the weather gets cold. This lack of resilience can cause unnecessary stress on homeowners who will have to replace the tiles out of their own pocket.

Less Costly

Less costly than porcelain tiles, ceramic tiles are more accessible for the everyday person to use and experiment with. However, the lesser cost and quality can often mean that ceramic tiles need to be replaced more often, so this is important to consider when selecting ceramic or porcelain tiles.

With showers being such a crucial part of everyday hygiene and comfort, the quality and aesthetics of your shower are an investment in both your physical and mental health. When it comes to choosing the base of your shower, there are two common options that people consider first: polymarble and tile-on. Both shower base options offer their own pros and cons, let’s explore which is the better choice for your shower.

What Are Polymarble Shower Bases?

As the name suggests, polymarble looks similar to marble, however, it comes with several distinct advantages due to being made of polyurethane resin, a gel coated surface and fillers to increase strength. Polymarble has been used for sinks, bathroom countertops and shower bases for over 35 years.

The Pros of a Polymarble Shower Base

One of the biggest advantages of polymarble shower bases is how hygienic and easily cleaned they are. Showers are always under the threat of mould growth, but a polymarble shower base makes it difficult for mould and bacteria to penetrate, meaning it won’t seep into the material. You also won’t have to worry about grout, which is one of the easiest places for mould to grow.

Polymarble shower bases are more durable than most other options available, being significantly more difficult to scratch or damage. Additionally, polymarble is a more affordable option for your shower base and is available in multiple sizes. If you want a simple solution that doesn’t require much maintenance, a polymarble shower base is a great choice.

The Cons of Polymarble Shower Bases

Although polymarble is available in plenty of sizes, you are restricted to those available sizes for your shower base, meaning that if you want a custom size, you’ll have to consider other options such as a tiled shower base. Polymarble can be a less aesthetically pleasing option when compared to tiled showers depending on the bathroom.

What Are Tile-On Shower Bases?

If you are looking to give your bathroom or ensuite a stylish and modern appearance, you can’t go wrong with a tile-on shower base. The shower tile base is manufactured from a composite that is environmentally friendly, lightweight and water repellent. Before the tiles are installed, a prefabricated metal tray is placed down, creating a seamless tiled shower base that offers more options for drainage.

The Pros of Tile-On Shower Bases

There are many benefits to a tiled shower base beyond the beautiful aesthetic. Being completely waterproof, a tile-on shower base reduces the risk of leaks causing damage to your home, particularly if the shower is placed on a second storey. The metal tray is concealed beneath the tiles, keeping the water safely contained as it drains. Other benefits of tile-on shower bases include level entry, a 7-year manufacturer warranty and customisable sizes.

The Cons of Tile-On Shower Bases

When it comes to shower base options, you can’t get more luxurious and modern than tile-on. The installation of the tray and tiles results in an increased cost when compared to polymarble shower base installation, but could be worth the expense if you’re trying to create a specific look and feel for your bathroom.

Tile-on shower bases also require more maintenance with cleaning and servicing than polymarble. Although it is often recommended that the silicon joints are redone every three years, it can be beneficial to do so every 1-2 years as a preventative measure against costly problems such as mould.

Which Shower Base Should You Choose?

Whether you opt for tile-on or polymarble shower bases will depend on your budget, and your requirements, with each option having significant advantages. Ultimately, it is going to come down to what you are hoping to get out of your shower base. If you are looking to achieve a luxurious aesthetic and give your shower a modern look, a tile-on shower base is an excellent choice. On the other hand, if you want a more durable and easy option that involves less maintenance, you should choose polymarble.

Whichever shower base option you think will be best for your bathroom, the Victorian Bathroom Company is here to help. For a free consultation with us, call our friendly team on (03) 9909 5350 or book directly via our contact page today.

Just because your bathroom is small, doesn’t mean it has to feel that way. With the right tricks and some clever design, you can turn your cramped bathroom into a space that suits your needs while also feeling roomy and relaxing.

Need some inspiration to transform your small bathroom? Here are the Victorian Bathroom Company’s best tips on how to design a bathroom in a small space that works.

Utilise Mirrors

One of your top priorities when it comes to renovating your small bathroom should be strategic use of mirrors. When placed right, mirrors double the perceived visual space in a room, making it appear much more spacious than it actually is.

The bigger the mirror, the better it will be at transforming a small bathroom into something that feels comfortable and much larger than its actual dimensions, especially if you make good use of natural lighting to complement it.

Incorporate Storage

Making good use of storage is one of the most effective bathroom renovation ideas for small bathrooms. Nothing will make a bathroom feel more cramped than the clutter from poor storage options. If you are going to be renovating your small bathroom, it is always worth investing in more storage space like adding shelving for the shower or a larger vanity.

There are numerous ways to add storage space without making your bathroom feel even smaller. Wall-mounted storage, pull-out vertical drawers or a storage rack on the back of the door are great options that work well in small bathrooms.

Add a Splash of Colour to Your Tiles

It is best to be careful when considering bathroom tile design ideas for small bathrooms, as too much colour can feel overwhelming in a tight space. Generally, it is best to choose simple tiles for the floor, and install accent tiling on the walls if you want to add a splash of colour. By using accent tiles carefully, you can draw the eye to a location of your choice.

Reliable locations for accent tiles include behind the vanity or underneath the mirror. Some bathrooms also work well with accent tiles on the shower wall. By giving the shower a different appearance than the rest of the bathroom, you can make the space feel significantly larger.

White on White

Using predominantly white or neutral colours is the best option to create the illusion of more space. Light colours tend to make a room feel larger than it is in reality. If you do want some colour, accent tiles as mentioned above or accessories are the best way to go.

If you want to get the most out of your bathroom with white on white, adding nickel or bronze tapware is an excellent way to create a sense of light, which will naturally make the room seem bigger.

Consider Your Shower Options

When planning your renovations, it is important to consider small bathroom ideas with shower space that doesn’t take away from the rest of the bathroom. The first decision to make is whether you want only a shower or a shower and a bath. For the latter, you want to find a shower and bath combination that maximises space while still having a touch of luxury.

If you’re happy with only a shower, there are a few more options to keep the bathroom feeling spacious. One of the most popular methods is to skip the shower door altogether, instead installing a frameless panel shower screen, giving the bathroom a modern look.

Discuss Your Ideas Today

Having a small bathroom shouldn’t stop you from being able to enjoy the space. All it takes is the right design and a team to make it happen. The Victorian Bathroom Company’s professional designers are the experts when it comes to working with small bathrooms.

Rimless toilets are a new generation of toilet technology that manages to be cleaner and more hygienic than a traditional toilet while offering superior flushing performance. Where a standard toilet is built with a box rim that runs along the edge of the bowl, fitted with holes so water can spray down when you flush the toilet, rimless toilets operate more intelligently, propelling water from just the back edge of the toilet bowl so it is circulated around the bowl as it flushes, eliminating the need for the rim.

There are many benefits of rimless toilets over traditional designs. For one, this rimless flush is inherently easier to access and clean when it comes time for you to scrub the bowl yourself. They are also more efficient with their water use, as the rotational flushing action is more intelligently designed than the “dumping” flush of a traditional toilet and can accomplish more with a single flush cycle.

A More Hygienic Option

Traditionally designed toilets feature a box rim that sits around the top edge of your bowl. Water is released from numerous nozzles placed underneath this rim when you activate your toilet’s flush cycle to clean the bowl. Due to its placement, the rim itself receives very little cleaning from this water as it cleans the rest of the toilet, and the crevasse can become a breeding ground for bacteria, germs and even mould.

Due to its sleeker design, there are far fewer places on a rimless toilet for this sort of growth to take place between flushes. The lack of a crevasse under the rim also makes the bowl much simpler for a person to clean, meaning that any grime that does stick around is easier to remove.

Superior Flushing Technology

Rimless toilets use an intelligently designed direct-flushing system that cleans the whole bowl with a rotational sweep of water, rather than the inefficient hosing flow from a traditional toilet bowl. As mentioned, this makes the rimless bowl much cleaner and more hygienic than a standard toilet you may be used to, but it also has the added benefit of being more water efficient.

By more powerfully utilising the same (or even less) water than a standard toilet bowl, your rimless toilet can save you money with every flush – and potentially stop you from ever having to flush twice again.

The Affordable Option

Rimless toilet options are quickly becoming an established part of the modern toilet market, meaning that they’re no longer the niche or luxury item that they once were. Instead they’ve become more and more affordable, available at a range of price points in line with what you would expect to pay for a traditional box rim toilet.

With their more hygienic approach, ease of cleaning and much more efficient design that could help you save on your water bill, a rimless toilet may be the best choice for you and your home.

A well-designed bathroom can be a luxurious and relaxing sanctuary in your home, offering a space to prepare for the day ahead or rest once it is done.

Over the years, new bathroom renovations and styles have trended towards creating spaces that maximise storage and functionality while also being visually appealing. The most popular recent trends are tailored towards creating a spacious and aesthetically pleasing oasis that provides you with greater functionality.

While we hone in on the most popular recent bathroom finish trends, it’s still important to touch on the broader design trends of the last few years. Both small and large bathrooms have been increasingly styled with low-maintenance plants that add stunning pops of colour to the space and create a spa-like feeling.

As always, bathroom fixtures and wall finishes accompany these more prominent design decisions. To maximise the serenity of your bathroom, carefully consider everything from large design decisions to intricate bathroom finishes.

Trendy Bathroom Finishes

There are a number of stylish bathroom finishes that are growing in popularity. Finishes refers to the different elements on the surface of fixtures or tiles that create unique differences in the final appearance of the bathroom. Some of our favourite finishes this year include:

Stylish Bathroom Finishes

1. Satin White Tiles

Satin white tiles are one of our favourite bathroom wall finishes. This sleek and modern tile is not only the perfect balance between honed and polished tiles, it reflects more light than matte tiles, creating a brighter and more open look in your bathroom. The softer appearance of the satin white tile can also be maintained for many years, as it is easy to wash and clean.

2. Rural Oak Vanity

Rural oak chalk (textured) is a bathroom vanity wood finish that has taken the bathroom design industry to new heights. A Laminex product, this is one of the top trending colours, with a mid-tone warm woodgrain with an oak structure and a slightly weathered finish. Vanities, cabinets and tallboys in rural oak add some much-needed warmth to bathrooms that are looking to create an idyllic atmosphere.

3. Bench-Top Finishes

There are a number of additional trendy benchtop finishes that can be incorporated into your bathroom. Recent years have seen the rise of natural and raw benchtop finishes, which can be used as a decorative element on vanities, side tables and bath caddies. The extensive variety of stylish benchtop finishes, including stone, solidsurface, ceramic and quartz gives homeowners and designers the flexibility to create a simultaneously luxurious and relaxing bathroom environment.

4. Matte-Black Fixtures

Matte black is one of the most sophisticated bathroom fixture finishes. This classic finish has become increasingly popular in the design space, and has given homeowners the opportunity to make a stylish, yet bold statement in their bathrooms. Matte black fixtures have the added advantage of being easy to clean and maintain. They look fantastic when paired with timber and concrete finishes.

Given that the laundry is likely to be one of the smallest rooms in your home, it’s important to maximise the space to make the most of it, which is why a pull-out hamper is so effective.

Whether the hamper goes under a bench or in a cupboard, it will go a long way toward making your laundry feel spacious and improving its appearance. With a pull-out hamper being both functional and hidden away, it’s a great place to start if you are wondering how to renovate your laundry.

Clothes rail or electric drying rack

To get the most out of your laundry renovation, it can be helpful to consider the convenience of drying clothes and linens indoors. You won’t always be able to rely on an outdoor clothesline for drying, particularly in Melbourne, so having another option is crucial for those long stretches of rainy days.

Fortunately, there are quite a few options for laundry drying space, some of which involve getting particularly creative, such as having a bottomless draw that you can hang washing from, which slides back to create more space when you are done. However, we recommend either a clothes rail or an electric drying rack as the two best options for drying clothes in the laundry, as they each combine style, space and functionality.

Benchtop selection

Choosing the right benchtop for your laundry renovation is all about finding the right balance between those two essential elements of practicality and style. There are plenty of incredible options for your stone benchtop, but picking the right one will mean assessing what sort of aesthetics you are after for your laundry.

Different benchtops have their own unique advantages, so it is important to do some further research before settling on your choice. Some common options for laundry renovation benches include granite, marble and quartz.

Storage

Maximising your storage space is essential for any good laundry renovation, and fortunately, there are plenty of ways to work with your room size and storage needs. A few excellent options include open shelves under wall cabinets, taller cabinetry and a broom cupboard.

When you are planning your renovation, it might be helpful to note everything you would like to store in your laundry, then plan out how you can do so most efficiently. The laundry can be one of the best places for storage in a home, so be sure to make the most of it.

Pull-out ironing board

It can be a hassle figuring out where to store your ironing board, which is why a pull-out ironing board can be such an excellent option for your laundry. It’s another one of those laundry renovation ideas that works to combine functionality with aesthetics – it’s easy to use when you need it and out of sight when you don’t.

Planning and completing a renovation can be a lot of stressful work, which is why the Victorian Bathroom Company is here to help with laundry renovations Melbourne residents can rely on. What is a shower niche?

A shower, or bath, niche is an increasingly trendy and practical addition to newly renovated or designed bathrooms.

Also known as a recessed shower shelf, or built in shelf, bathroom niches are the perfect way to store your shower essentials. In most cases, a bathroom niche is cut into the wall to create extra storage, thereby making a space that is luxurious and free from clutter.

A shower niche that is properly designed and executed makes for a unique design element within your bathroom. When coming up with bathroom niche ideas, it’s important to choose the right style niche for your space. Also consider the size of the niche and its placement.

The different type of bathroom niches

Horizontal niche

The horizontal niche is possibly the most striking of the bathroom niches. Depending on your style, it can span widely across the shower or bath thereby offering an expansive space for storage. This type of niche is the most commonly installed and will require much more extensive renovation expertise than other bathroom niches. If you’re considering installing a horizontal niche in your bathroom, it’s best to consult a bathroom renovation expert before commencing.

Brushed steel niche and matte black niche

Super-tall niche

The super-tall niche is the vertical variety of bathroom niches. By properly planning to incorporate the super tall niche into your shower, you can effectively blend functionality with a truly elegant design element.

The super-tall niche is also a great way to minimise renovation costs, as you remove the need to pay for any additional structural fortifications by extending upwards between the existing wall studs rather than horizontally.

Nib wall bathroom niche

A nib wall is a unique way of creating space in your bathroom. This type of shelving is created by extending out a single wall in your shower or behind your bath, creating a ledge with the same practical purposes as a niche. Nib walls are traditionally larger than a standard niche and run the full length of the shower or bath.

Use the space above the toilet

If your toilet is in your bathroom area you have a unique opportunity to utilise the space above it. Adding a shelf to the wall above the toilet will allow you to use this extra space to store clean towels or add a pop of colour with bathroom appropriate plants.

Shower storage

Basket hangers and suction tubs are a great way to add storage to your shower. These options will keep your hair and beauty products off the floor, for a better overall shower experience.

Alternatively, for a more permanent storage solution, you can request a professional bathroom renovator cut out and tile a recessed shelf that is big enough to hold all your bathroom products.

IMG_9203

Tile over niche

The tile over niche is one of the most popular bathroom niche options. The tile over niche needs to be custom constructed into a framed box, which will then be positioned between the wall studs. The bathroom renovator will then need to cover the bathroom wall niche with tile backer board, waterproof it and then tile it using the tiles of your choice. Be sure to work with a professional renovator as this type of niche is time-consuming to build and can be prone to errors.

With the vast majority of bathroom niches being tile over, this is the design option most people will choose. However, some homeowners and bathroom designers may opt for niche insert boxes in various finishes such as chrome, matte black and brushed nickel to suit their personal style.

IMG_7854

Shower niche designs

Shower niches are diverse and can be designed to suit your bathroom needs and design concepts. The most important decisions homeowners need to make when considering their shower niche design are size including height and positioning.

Size and height

The size and height of your bathroom niche will depend on your individual needs. It is important to consider how you will use the niche and where it will look best within your bathroom. You may wish for your shower niche to be very tall and vertical or long and horizontal, both of which can be beneficial in your bathroom.

If you are adding a bathroom niche into your shower, the most practical height is likely just above the waist or approximately just under one metre from the ground. This is the most convenient height to be able to reach your shower products easily. In contrast, if you have a bathtub/shower, you will want the height of the bathroom niche to be lower to ensure that bathers can also reach their essential bath products.

Position

Where you position your bathroom niche will determine whether it is designed to be a focal point in your bathroom, a functional element, or both. Determining the positioning of the shower niche is truly a balancing act between functionality and shower design aesthetics and will often require the help of a professional bathroom designer to achieve perfect harmony between the two. As a general rule, it is recommended that your bathroom niche is not positioned on the valve wall as it is directly in the splash zone which may cause water damage in the long run.

Lighting

Adding more lighting is a sure way to create a feeling of luxury and ambience in your bathroom. Your electrician and bathroom installer can work together to come up with a lighting design that emphasises specific areas of your bathroom, and if it suits your style, may install a lighting strip in your bathroom niche.

Niche installation tips

When getting your bathroom niche installed, it’s important to follow all the necessary installation rules. The number one rule for installing a bathroom niche is to ensure it is properly waterproofed and integrates with the waterproofing membrane. Niches that aren’t expertly waterproofed may damage your bathroom going forward.

Additionally, one big mistake home renovators can make is installing the bathroom niche in an outside wall. This can cause serious problems in the long run as in some instances, moisture can build up behind your wall and break away at the study cavities in your wall. It is best to always position your shower niche in an internal wall to minimise the likelihood of any issues.

When done correctly, installing a bathroom wall niche is a fantastic way to improve your shower experience. By working with an experienced bathroom designer and renovator, you will enjoy the peace of mind that your bathroom niche is being installed to the highest standard.

Adding extra storage in your bathroom is a fantastic way to make the best use of a small space.

The way you use your bathroom will determine what bathroom storage solutions are right for you and help you use every square inch of your space to your advantage.

These bathroom storage ideas will help reduce the clutter in your bathroom and improve its overall functionality.

Know Your Bathroom

Whilst these are some of the best bathroom storage hacks to make the most of bathroom space, they won’t work for everyone. Adapting these ideas to suit your needs will give you the best chance to enjoy your bathroom.

Mount a towel rack

Mounting a towel rack onto your wall will not only free up space but possibly allow you to get rid of unnecessary bathroom cabinets altogether. Alternatively, you can mount a number of hooks onto your walls to hang the towels individually in an aesthetically pleasing manner.

Utilise the space under the sink

If you have a vanity with space underneath it, adding drawers or shelves is a great way to remove clutter. Organise the drawers so that similar bathroom or cleaning products are grouped together and if you have the space, leave a couple of drawers empty for when you need them.

Install bathroom shelves

Incorporating bathroom shelves on the walls of your bathroom doubles as a functional bathroom accessory and an interesting way to show off your natural style. As the shelves will be on display, we recommend putting your things in stylish baskets that hide the contents of what’s on your shelves.

IMG_9203

Corner shelf storage

Corner shelves are small and fit into tight places, giving you the opportunity to put more things away and keep them off the vanity.

Mirror cabinets

Mirror cabinets are one of the most popular ways to add storage space. When closed, your bathroom will feature a stylish mirror and when opened, your family will have quick and easy access to whatever you have tucked away.

Know Your Bathroom

Whether you have a large or small bathroom, want to maximise natural light or storage space, here are some considerations when making changes to your bathroom.

Space

Assessing the amount of space your bathroom has is extremely important when making a decision on the best type of bathroom vanity and sink

Depending on the layout of your bathroom, there are different things you need to consider.

If you have limited space you may want a more compact vanity that maximises usable space. For bathrooms with greater area, double vanity with extra storage space may be the best way to go.

Light

Different types of vanities can help you maximise the amount of natural light in your bathroom.

If your bathroom is poorly lit, it may be useful to consider a vanity with a large mirror to help reflect any available natural light. Otherwise, bathrooms with sufficient light should opt for vanities that won’t block sunlight.

IMG_9241

Use

The way you use your bathroom will help determine the type of vanity you need.

If your bathroom is in a master ensuite, then you may consider a dual sink unit to help you save time in the mornings. Parents with young families may opt for safer options with cabinets tucked away behind the mirror rather than drawers and cupboards.

Different Types of Vanities

Wall-mounted vanities

Wall-mounted vanities are stylish, eye-catching and a popular choice for modern bathrooms.

These types of vanities are designed to be affixed directly onto the bathroom wall. This gives homeowners the freedom to create the illusion of a more spacious bathroom by leaving a gap between the floor and the bottom of the vanity.

It’s important to note that to properly install a wall-mounted vanity, the walls of your bathroom must be reinforced.

Pedestal vanity

For bathrooms with little space, such as powder rooms and ensuites, a pedestal vanity is a fantastic option. Pedestal vanities not only help homeowners make better use of their space but also exude vintage charm.

Under-mounted basin

The under-mounted basin is well known for its aesthetically pleasing and luxurious look. In this type of vanity, the basin is attached to the inside so that the vanity achieves an overall ‘flatter’ look.

This refined look does come at the cost of storage space, which will need to be incorporated elsewhere in your bathroom.

IMG_8494

Dual vanity

Dual vanities are a popular choice for bathrooms that get used by a lot of people on a daily basis.

Dual vanities require a significant amount of bathroom space and are more costly to install, but are worth their weight in gold when it comes to saving time and creating a more comfortable space.

See more vanities in action

Choosing the right vanity for your bathroom will help to increase the overall look and feel of your space.

Looking for Bathroom Shower Design Inspiration?

While there are many types of showers to choose from, selecting a design that is right for you can drastically improve the ease-of-use and enjoyment of your showering experience.

Walk-In

When you’re looking for bathroom renovation inspiration, one of the best places to start is with the contemporary designs of other bathrooms. Thankfully we’re here to tell you about all the best bathroom renovation ideas 2020 and 2021 have to offer.

Add a Niche

When browsing shower remodel ideas, consider adding a niche to your shower design. Many of us have been guilty of placing bottles of shampoo and conditioner on the floor or balancing them on the soap dish. A shower niche is a simple storage space set in the wall of your shower where you can neatly store these shower accessories that usually get in the way.

Open or closed door

When selecting your walk-in shower design you have the choice of an open or closed door shower. This decision ultimately comes down to a style choice. Those who prefer a more private bathroom experience can opt for a closed door design with walls that are either fully transparent, semi-transparent, or etched glass. One downside to closed door designs is that it does mean more surface area that needs to be cleaned.

A negative of the open shower is, when you’re in it, you feel the cold from the room. An enclosed shower keeps you warmer.

Tub to Shower

We’re always looking for ways to make our bathrooms more spacious, but if you’re feeling your bathroom is a bit too roomy you can always opt for a tub to shower design. A tub to shower design is when you have a standalone walk-in shower in the same room as the bathtub. This design works best when a walk-in shower adjoins the bath but you can also have polymarble trays installed here instead.

IMG_8797

Shower (wet room)

Shower rooms consist of a walk-in shower with fully tiled walls. Ensuring proper ventilation in these shower spaces is key to maintaining the longevity of the grouts and sealants. Shower rooms can also be designed to include storage spaces to keep towels and other shower accessories.

Shower and Bath combo

This setup is ideal if your bathroom is a bit cramped or you’re a young family who would benefit from both a bathtub and a shower. This practical and low cost option gives you the best of both worlds by encompassing a shower over the bath.

Something for Small Bathrooms?

When considering your shower design ideas it is important to think about the maintenance of your bathroom. Keeping your bathroom in good condition involves ensuring that your bathroom is easy to clean and well ventilated.

Thinking about the space

When choosing what type of shower you want in your bathroom, take time to consider the layout of the space. Think about where the light is in comparison to where the water will run.

Think about where the doors are, and if there are any obstructions in the bathroom. Consider how much space your bathroom currently has, how much additional space you need for storage, and how much moving space you think someone would want.

Our 3D Bathroom Planning technology allows us to plan your bathroom renovation and ensure you have adequate space.

Understanding the use

Who is going to be using the bathroom will direct how the space should be designed. If you have small children in your home then you may be in need of a bathtub, whereas if you’re someone with mobility issues perhaps a walk-in shower would be a better design for you.

The aesthetic choices for your bathroom are endless thanks to the variety of bathroom tile styles available.

Through the selection of tile colour, shape, layout pattern, and grouting colour, you have the flexibility to create a unique bathroom that you will love.

Mosaic Tiles

Mosaic tiles are a popular choice for bathrooms as they are highly decorative and add a splash of colour to your bathroom tile design. A mosaic design is expertly crafted by assembling small pieces of different tile together to create either a random specific pattern formation.

Natural Looks

If you’re looking for small bathroom tile ideas that can open up your bathroom to create a more spacious feel, consider opting for something natural and earthy.

A simplistic design with beige and sandy coloured tiles is a great way to open up your bathroom without making it look too cluttered with a busy design.

Fishtail Tiles

Given that your bathroom is a place where there is a lot of water, have you considered a more nautical tile design?

If you’re a lover of organic design, then fishtail tiles are a great way to subtly bring a touch of the ocean to you.

IMG_8494

Subway Tiles

Subway tiles have hit a style resurgence in the last decade.

These tiles can be stacked horizontally or vertically and you can control how simple or lively the design will be through the colour choice.

Webp.net-resizeimage (1)

Features

While some people love it, others get put off by the simple white bathroom tile ideas seen in many stylish houses as they find it can look too clinical.

It’s amazing how you can instantly add a dash of personality to your bathroom by adding a patterned inlay or feature wall to draw attention to a specific area in the bathroom.

Colours

With so many colours, tones, and shades, the opportunities to create a stylish design are endless.

Colour variety in your bathroom can be seen in the tiles themselves and the pattern they are placed in. Even the grouting you use can add a colour pop.

IMG_5438

Terazzo

When one colour is not enough but a pattern is too much, terrazzo tiles subtly add a variety of pattern and tone to your bathroom without becoming too distracting.

Tile Your Bathroom with Confidence

Just like other areas of the house, the bathroom offers endless style freedom due to the great variety of tile designs available. If you’re looking for the latest bathroom tiles to enhance your bathroom space then please get in contact with our friendly team.

Bathroom Designs for Disabled or Elderly

As the saying goes, ‘most accidents happen at home’.

As a place in the home that we find ourselves visiting numerous times a day, the bathroom can unfortunately be hazardous to those with mobility issues.

With more and more individuals choosing to be comfortable at home, designing a bathroom that accommodates for functional needs is becoming more apparent.

Knowing what to consider is key to designing a comprehensive and well thought-out bathroom.

toilet_bathroom-appliance-sink-washbasin_bathroom-appliance-throne-toilet

Specific Area Modifications

When designing a bathroom with safety in mind, it can be hard to know where to start.

A good place to begin is to consider the mobility and health status of those who will frequent the bathroom. Once you have identified these needs, you can then consider the following changes:

When we think of a toilet that is future proofed for the elderly or those with disabilities, the first adjustment we consider is the installation of handrail support.

While this is a great way to assist the user with standing up and getting on and off the toilet, there are other ways you can approach this.

Consider a seat extender and the height of the toilet.

Ensuring the toilet is at an appropriate height will be extremely helpful to those who have reduced movement and need assistance when getting on and off the toilet.

While some people might experience pain in their legs or back, others might have reduced mobility in their hands. This is why it’s important to also consider the ease of use of the toilet’s flushing mechanism.

Everyone uses their shower differently, just as everyone has different physical requirements. Installing a handrail might seem like an easy solution, but there is a lot more than can be done to suit the user’s mobility.

Some people might benefit from the installation of a bath seat or ledge while for others this could be considered a hazard.

If you’re looking to give the user more independence during their shower, then consider a detachable showerhead. A detachable showerhead allows the person to bathe themselves while sitting down.

Removing hazards is the best way to prevent accidents in the shower, regardless of mobility status.

A great way to minimise accidents is to install non-slip flooring or mats on your shower floor.

This will help prevent dangerous slips and falls.

Stepping over the side of a bathtub might be easy for some of us, but for others it is an impossible task.

As well as a wheelchair accessible bathroom design, bathtubs now come with design features such as doors which can improve ease of entry.

Handrail support can also be extremely helpful for those who need assistance pulling themselves out of the bath.

These rails do not need to come at the cost of a stylish bathroom. Many interior and bathroom designers now have handrail support which can come in a variety of sleek designs to suit your bathroom.

The basin is the most versatile area of the bathroom as it is used for numerous activities including face washing, teeth brushing, and washing your hands.

While these seem like small easy day-to-day activities, they can be a real struggle to anyone who has poor hand strength or suffers from visual impairment.

Basin designs for people with a disability can include a larger sink to reduce mess, and a sensor activated tap for ease of use.

Don’t forget: all taps whether it is your shower, bath, or basin need to be clearly labelled to prevent burns.

Requirements for ability

An easy-to-use disabled bathroom design is one that is specific to the user’s mobility and physical needs.

Future proofing involves more than just thinking about your current mobility. It’s also about considering how your range of movement will change over time. People are more likely to experience joint and muscular pain with age which results in decreased mobility.

When designing a bathroom, keep in mind the distance between the basin and the toilet.

Allow for enough space to avoid exhaustion but also provide a safe distance to minimise potential head-hitting hazards should someone slip or fall.

People can experience muscle deterioration or loss of strength for a variety of reasons.

Unfortunately, a loss of strength over time can start to make the most simple tasks such as sitting on the toilet or getting out of the bath more difficult.

A few adjustments that can be made to improve comfort include raising the toilet seat height so it is easier for the user to sit down and get up, and installing handrails so the user has something they can hold onto when they need to support themselves.

Not all disabilities are mobility and strength based.

Those living with visual impairment are also at risk of accidents when using the bathroom.

There are numerous design features that can be included to accommodate those with visual impairment.

While hand railings serve as a helpful guide, motion detector taps and lighting, as well as a low-toilet and bath can help prevent accidents.

When it comes to new bathroom ideas there are plenty to choose from regardless of your personal tastes. Bathroom trends are always changing, but 2020 has some gorgeous styles to offer for your bathroom creation or renovation.

Top 10 Bathroom Style Ideas for 2020

Coastal

A coastal style bathroom is all about capturing the holiday vibe in your own home. With soft blues and yellows along with pristine white, a coastal bathroom style design can become the most relaxing space in your house. Driftwood and shell fittings can work to increase that feeling, bringing the beach right to you.

Industrial

When it comes to a smooth and polished bathroom, the industrial style is a fantastic choice. While this style began with warehouse conversion into public housing, it has recently hit mainstream.

Industrial bathrooms are all about raw materials like brick and steel mixed with precise use of neutral tones. With high ceilings and exposed designs, you’ll have plenty of space to think and prepare for each day.

Monochrome

Everybody considering bathroom redo ideas will come across monochrome, a style which is about as timeless as they come. Modelling your bathroom with predominantly white and black tones can result in a calming effect, perfect for a space often associated with reflection. It’s also extremely versatile, meaning you can still fill the room with your own personality, even using only two tones.

Wall hung vanity with stone inset basin

Scandi Style

If you’re looking to introduce some rustic textures into your bathroom, the scandinavian style might be perfect for you. This style creates a smooth and stylish space through deep, natural tones, white, and organic materials such as timber and stone. This is a style that’s likely to stay popular for a long time, so it’s a safe choice for all bathroom makeovers.

Spa Luxe

Walk-in showers, spa-baths and double basins are just a few of the things that can make your bathroom feel like a day spa in your own home. By adding a wall-hung vanity and a chic colour scheme, you’ll be well on your way to living in luxury. Combine these elements in unique ways that suit your needs and taste.

Traditional

There’s a reason the traditional bathroom style has lasted so long. You can’t go wrong with a cool and classic aesthetic. Traditional will always be one of the trending bathroom styles, mainly for its simplicity. Everybody has a unique taste when it comes to bathrooms, but a clean and elegant style is for just about everyone.

Transitional

The transitional bathroom style is one of the most popular at the moment, creating a perfect blend of traditional and contemporary bathroom design. The hallmarks of a transitional bathroom are clean lines without being too sleek, and a warm aesthetic overall. Rich wood and stone benches usually complete a transitional bathroom, adding a luxe feel without becoming overwhelming.

Marble

Marble is one of the easiest ways to elevate your bathroom’s style to next level elegance and class. It’s historic without being old, calming but not empty, and most importantly when done right it looks fantastic. Marble benches and sinks are just the start of it. Your bathroom can have walls and floor made from marble as well, if that’s your style.

Brass and Gold

There’s nothing quite like the elegance of brass and gold furnishings in a bathroom. Chrome used to be the only option when it came to tapware and handles, but now there are a variety of options to make your bathroom stand out. Brass, gold and copper work well with a wide variety of other bathroom design options, meaning you can fit them into whatever style you like most.

Spaciousness

Making your bathroom feel and look bigger is something many people want out of their new bathroom designs. This can be done through open, walk-in showers, careful selection of basins and even your colour choices. White on white is one of the easiest ways to increase the sense of spaciousness in your bathroom, as is a floating vanity.

Ensuite Bathroom Renovations

Dreaming of a new ensuite? Great!

This type of upgrade is a step toward getting more value from your home, as well as offering a great new space.

Even though it might seem like a relatively small job, there’s more to the ensuite renovation process than you might imagine – in fact, it can be just as involved as a main bathroom overhaul.

We’ve created this checklist to provide you with a simple breakdown of what to expect from your ensuite bathroom renovation.

The Process

1. Initial Consultation

Your installer will consult with you onsite at your home to find out your needs, assess the space, and get all the information they need to give you a quote. They’ll also show you examples of their range and answer any questions.

Ideally, choose a company that will send an experienced installer to do this, rather than a salesperson. VBC’s quote consultations are conducted by fully qualified bathroom installers, who are able to provide expert advice and assess potential issues accurately.

2. Receiving a quote

Within 7 business days of your consultation, you will be issued with a comprehensive quote. VBC’s quotes detail all aspects of the job, including plumbing, plastering, carpentry, waterproofing and tiling.

This complete quote allows you to see exactly where your money will be going. You can then make an informed decision about moving forward with your ensuite remodel.

ensuite consultation

3. Booking

The next step is booking in your renovation. Once you’ve accepted the quote, you’ll be able to secure a start date. This will require you to pay a 5% deposit.

At this point, VBC provides a process document outlining what the next steps are, including a schedule of payment stages.

4. Selecting Materials

After you’re booked in, you will be sent a Materials Checklist. This details the quantities of tiles required, as well as specs and sizes of the required fixtures and fittings.

You can then schedule an appointment at the installer’s showroom, where you’ll be able to select your preferred materials based on your style and budget. Selected items are stored until the project commences (you don’t need to store them yourself).

5. Preparation/check-in

A few weeks before your booked start date, your installer should check in with you to make sure everything is clear and agreed upon so we’re ready to go. At this point, VBC will send a Pre-Works Checklist – a handy guide for preparing your space.

If applicable, the installer may arrange for a skip bin to be delivered to the site the day before work starts.

6. Commencement of work (Day 1)

On day 1, you’ll meet the installer/s onsite at your home. The set-up phase includes running through the project, unloading equipment, and covering walkways and other parts of the home to prevent damage.

At VBC, our tradesmen start each project by completing a detailed checklist, which is then submitted back to the office. This ensures that everything is in order, and prevents delays or issues down the track. The checklist includes taking ‘before’ photos, checking that all materials, tiles and fixtures are on site, setting up, laying drop sheets, and arranging access/keys.

7. Installation Period

This is the main event: your new ensuite is put in! If any unforeseen need to change the design or vary the scope/timeframe of the works arises during this process, the installation team will communicate this to you clearly, as soon as possible.

If such a situation arises, VBC’s installers will communicate this verbally (either in person or by phone), and follow up in writing (via email) for your approval.

Our tradesmen take daily photos and report on works completed each day.

8. Work Completion

Your newly renovated ensuite has been fully installed! A good installer will take responsibility for thoroughly checking the finished product, ensuring that quality is up to standard and all elements are as agreed on by the client.

Upon completing work, VBC’s tradesmen will complete a Quality Systems Checklist and hold an onsite inspection with you to ensure you are happy with the work.

All equipment will be packed down, mess cleaned up and waste removed from the site. Any access keys you provided will be returned to you.

9. Documentation

Following completion of the project, you will be issued with a final invoice, along with Compliance Certificates.

You should keep these for your records.

10. Follow Up

After around 12 months, it’s a good idea to have your new ensuite checked for any maintenance needed.

A good installation company will follow up with you to assist you with organising this in the most efficient and cost-effective way.

Extra Tips

  • For stylistic consistency across your home, it’s worth considering making your ensuite reno part of a larger project. This may include the main bathroom, and often the laundry as well. Having multiple rooms renovated at the same time is more efficient and cost-effective than doing them as separate projects, giving better value in the long term.

  • Be sure to choose an installation company that’s fully accountable for what’s being done in your home. VBC’s tradesmen take daily photos during the installation process, and report on works completed each day.

  • Keep in mind that you won’t be able to use the space during the installation process, so you’ll need to plan for this. We also advise our clients not to use the newly renovated space for a minimum of 48 hours following installation.

  • To maximise the lifespan of your new bathroom, it’s a good idea to have a shower service 12 months after installation. VBC will contact you with a reminder about this.

It’s the most asked question in our industry, ‘how much does a bathroom renovation cost’ and we understand why.

So lets break it down.

There are hundreds of bathroom renovators out there, all pricing their services and skills at varying cost levels. Our value is placed on the qualified labour and skillset applied to creating a quality bathroom.

As a rule of thumb, labour and building materials costs are at least double, (sometimes treble) the cost of the tiles, fixtures and fittings. This may seem quite a shock, but when you consider the number of professional trades and skills involved in such works you will understand why this is so.

There are:

  • Plumbers
  • Tilers
  • Waterproofers
  • Plasterers
  • Carpenters

With all of these trades working on a bathroom renovation for a constant number of days and weeks this is where the majority of the cost lies.

According to a recent report, the Home Industry Association (HIA) identified that

the average value for bathrooms installed as part of a renovation at $19,553.

As bathroom renovations are our business, this is how we would answer “how much does a bathroom renovation cost?”;

A simple yet sylish bathroom renovation costs from $17,000 plus $5,000 on tiles and bathroom wares. This would include half tiling the room, no changes to plumbing, like for like with new off the shelf fixtures.

A mid-level renovation, with some changes to plumbing, walk in tiled shower base, shower niche and floor to ceiling tiling costs from $23,000 plus $7-$8,000 on your tiles and fixtures etc.

A high-end renovation encompasses all that a mid-range reno has but with more of it and custom made vanities, freestanding baths that ‘wow’, lux tapwear and feature tiling. A bathroom of this status would cost from $36,000 plus over $15,000 for the bathroom wares.

It’s also worth mentioning that what you are willing to spend on your bathroom(s) should be relative to the value of your property. A house valued at over $2million will not achieve a desired outocome with a low-level renovation and the same applies for a lesser valued home; a house worth $500,000 would not benefit (financially) from spending $35,000 on a bathroom.

1. Insurances,
Warranties & Guarantees

Need we say more? We at the Victorian Bathroom Company are a Registered Builder and Licenced Plumber. We take accountability for our workmanship and permanently employ our small team of 4 experienced and qualified tradesman – which means we won’t pass the buck if something we to go wrong.

We comply to the strict guidelines of the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) and provide all applicable insurances; Public Liability, WorkCover and Domestic Building Insurance as well as the required warranties on our work.

If there are any issues, down the track, either from your own renovation work or project managing individual trades yourself then who is going to come back and sort it out? Food for thought….

2. Experience

Whether you are renovating to update your bathroom space for resale purposes or a growing family then experience is paramount. If you’re a gung-ho DIY’er then fair play to you, but if tools are not your friend then you’re potentially opening up a whole can of worms you may not be best experienced to deal with. Structural works may be involved, knowing the products and their applications, cutting and laying tiles; these are all qualified skills which are acquired with the correct training and over time.

Experienced installers can also advise on best possible layouts, tiling set out, bathroom styles and how best to make use of your bathroom space.

3. Cost

Whilst ripping out the bathroom yourself may start out like a good idea, and a less costly one, look at the bigger picture before pulling out the sledge hammer. Bathroom renovations sometimes incur extra works which are unforeseen and unknown until demolition has taken place i.e. water damaged timbers, extra structural supports etc. Also, professional costs to rectify damage done by home owners and handymen can be more than if a trades company were hired to do the project from the start. There’s also a lot of other costs which can get forgotten about, such as skip hire, building materials (it’s not just the pretty tiles and stunning bathroom wares you need) and crucially having the right tools to complete the works; tile cutter, hole-saws, drills, bits etc.

A professional bathroom specialist should also be able to give you better prices on your bathroom suite, which will ultimately save you more money than going direct to the high street.

4. Time

The average house bathroom renovation should take a professional team between 2.5-4 weeks. This is based on 40 hours a week with 2 guys on site from start to finish. If you have A LOT of annual leave accrued then you’ve got time on your side, but if not then it could take 2-3 months for a single homeowner to complete a full renovation outside of normal work hours (and that’s without time to watch the footy or enjoy a social life).

5. A Professional Does a Professional Job

It’s really that simple. If you’ve done your homework on bathroom renovation companies, got a few quotes, read previous client testimonials and seen pictures of their work then you should have a pretty good idea of the standard of work they do. If that standard exceeds your expectations then you should feel amazing in knowing that your project is in good hands and a professional outcome and result will be delivered.

This month we have been featured in the ever popular Mornington Peninsula Magazine. Read it here.

“…the family-run Victorian Bathroom Company has the expertise to create a bathroom that’s perfect for Peninsula living.”

Excellent! So you made the decision to get your bathroom renovated, but now what? You’ve done some research, hopefully got some recommendations from family and friends and done the due diligence to ensure you are approaching the companies who can deliver what you want. But what do you want? This is the key question we ask when quoting and many clients simply don’t know.

Before you get to the stage of organising quote appointments, sit down with a coffee (or a wine) a pen and paper and start with a few dot points of your desirables, your vision, what’s to be removed or relocated etc. The point is not to try and get too overwhelmed (or side tracked with Pintrest or Instagram – we all know it happens). Once you have a basic idea of what your renovation is to achieve then your quote appointments will run much more smoothly, saving you a lot of time in the long run. If you have the budget to do so then it’s sometimes worth getting a designer in to flesh out your dream bathroom, that way your plans can be used for each company to work from for the quote.

To ensure that you get three quotes which are each pricing for the same scope of works, it’s important they all have the same information. So send them the designers plans or email them your list of requirements to be sure you get easily comparable quotes – apples for apples and all that!

Having a basic concept is necessary before you meet with your potential builders, but don’t sweat the small stuff – that’s why we are the professionals and can guide and advise you on the best layouts, tile sizes and tiling heights. When the quotes roll in, you will find the process of reasonable comparison a much easier one and it will readily allow you to select your preferred renovator.

David Buckley

Thanks to Alexandra, Jamie, Adam, Rob, Mark and the whole team at Victorian Bathroom Company. We had our ensuite and main bathroom totally remodelled and new tiles added to our balcony floor… a 5-6 week effort with 3 months lockdown in between.

Throughout this time Alex provided regular updates and helped us with all of the early design and requirements (badly needed), Jamie looked after all the project management ensuring we didn’t need to worry about lining up supplies or trades (difficult with supply chain issues but seamless to us), Mark re-built our ensuite floor (which was in very bad shape to start with) and Adam and Rob turned the empty shells back into (what we believe) are now great looking bathrooms!

We’re very happy with the finished results, built with meticulous quality and great care… they even tidied up at the end of each day. We highly recommend VRC who may not be the cheapest but are arguably the best value for money.

Sophie B

“We had a shower repair/ remodel done by the Victorian Bathroom Company. Their service was exceptional From the initial quote to the completion of the job they were very professional. The quote provided for the job was very detailed but they also allowed us to make changes as we see fit (we decided to upgrade to a twin shower head and install a new toilet) the job was completed in the allocated time and completed to a very professional standard. I would recommend VBC and happy to use them again for our next bathroom project.”

Heather S

Victorian Bathroom Company did a great job with our bathroom renovation. With only one small bathroom in the unit the occupant moved out whilst the work was underway, although a portable bathroom was offered on site. We had a couple of delays to start date with Covid, but Alex was always prompt in keeping us informed. Thanks to Kathy for her styling help, and to Jamie in the first instance for his suggestions for the new layout. We are very happy with the quality of the work and fittings chosen. All contact was very professional and we have no hesitation in recommending Victorian Bathroom Company for this type of work.
